Guide to publishing your web site using your infogen web space
Step 1:
Email homepages@infogen.net.nz to have your pesonal webs space set up.
If you would like a counter on your pages, please select the style you would like
(you'll find the counter name next to the counter image) and request this counter in your email.
Step 2:
First of all you need to create some information to be placed into your personal webspace. There are a number of applications you can use to do this, but we have listed a few of our favourites below for you. If you already have web content you can skip down to step number 3.
Editors and Utilities
HTML Editors (beginners)
CoffeeCup Free HTML - This extremely simple web page program walks you through each and every step of the creation of your web page.
CD2HTML - A program that makes HTML pages out of directories, complete with links to the files, icons of the files.
Cool Page - Cool Page is an easy program that allows anyone to create a web page, no matter what their experience.
HTML Editors (advanced)
Arachnophilia - Format text tables and outlines and convert them into HTML code.
First Page 2000 - HTML/script authoring tool for professional and blooming webmasters.
W3e 2000 - This has just about all the features and modules you can want in an editor. This should make HTML coding much easier.
HTML Notes - A free editor with lots of features fully functional.
NOTE: Your main page, or start page, needs to be called index.html or index.htm for the webserver to automatically load it.
Step 3:
Once you have the information (webpages) that you wish to display, you need to place that information into your personal webspace. The process used to 'upload' the files into your webspace is called FTP (File Transfer Protocol). You may already have an FTP client on your machine, but if you do not, again we have listed a number of our favourites below for you.
Ftp Clients
WS_FTP - A very easy and user friendly FTP client.
Cute Ftp - Another user friendly and very good FTP client.
Bulletproof Ftp - A favourite FTP client of mine, not just for the fact it was written by a New Zealander.
ftp.exe - Windows built in ftp client. This client has no graphical goodies and is best left for those with previous experience with it.
Step 3:
1: Open your FTP client (all FTP clients look different, but achieve the same goal, and work around the same principals, for the purpose of our example, we will use one of my personal favourites, Bulletproof Ftp).
2: In the box labelled Host you will enter the hostname of the machine you wish to connect to, this is home.infogen.net.nz.
3: In the box labelled port leave this as 21. 21 is the default port number for FTP and is the port number home.infogen.net.nz uses.
4: In the box labelled login (This can also be known by other names such as User, Username, UserID in other FTP clients) enter your Infogen username WITHOUT the @infogen.net.nz eg: If your Infogen login is bob@infogen.net.nz ONLY use the bob
5: In the box labelled Pass enter your password.
6: Click the connect button.
You are now connected to the homepages server and are ready to upload your information/web content. Simply select your content from the left hand side window (NOTE: You will more than likely need to change into your web content directory as by default BPFTP starts in its own directory) and now 'drag and drop' it into the window on the right (this window displays what is in your website already). Now click the 'GO' button and you are done.
Your Website will now be viewable at http://home.infogen.net.nz/username/ where username is your infogen username WITHOUT the @infogen.net.nz
